Drift Beyond the Flame

Drift Beyond the Flame is a track by The Velvet Sundown, a project that surfaced on Spotify in June 2025 and drew attention when listeners noticed there were no records of live shows, no social media for its members and promotional photos that looked fake. It is the song on the 13-track album Floating on Echoes, released on 5 June 2025 and distributed through DistroKid, with the act itself named as the copyright holder. A critic for The National, reviewing the albums, listed it among titles that suggest emotional weight while the lyrics rarely move past generalities, and said it follows the same patterns as the album's other songs.

The act's Spotify biography was updated within a week of the early-July 2025 controversy to call it a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction, and composed, voiced and visualized with the support of artificial intelligence, described as an artistic provocation. A man who called himself an adjunct member, Andrew Frelon, told Rolling Stone that the music was made with Suno and was an art hoax, but he later said that statement was itself a hoax and that he had no connection to the band, so the tool behind this particular song is not confirmed. Deezer's detection tool flagged the band's music as fully AI-generated, according to Wikipedia. The album's tracks drew more than a million monthly Spotify listeners within weeks. As of 5 October 2026 the song had about 1.5 million Spotify plays, and its YouTube Topic upload about 78,600 views.
