An Instagram character called Jean Philanthrope, a man in a tweed suit who shadowboxes on Paris street corners, has turned out to be AI-generated, LADbible reported on September 28. The account's clips have drawn millions of views, one of them about 35.9 million, and the character has since been copied into hundreds of videos by other accounts.
The look is deliberately odd and easy to meme: a bleached-blond bob, a twirled moustache, a bow tie or tweed suit, and scenes that cut from road junctions and the Eiffel Tower to cafe tables with oysters or a croissant before he jumps up to throw punches at the camera. LADbible notes the name itself hints at the joke, since "philanthrope" comes from Greek roots meaning a lover of humanity. A near-identical rival, Archibald Brown, styled as his English opponent, has appeared on Instagram in the same format.
The character is tied to a cryptocurrency. Citing Dexerto, the outlet says there is speculation that Jean Phil was built to market a meme coin, and according to Coinbase figures it quotes, the JEANPHIL token climbed from 20 September to a peak of $0.02845 the next day, then lost more than 99 percent of its value before that day ended. Meme coins, the outlet explains, hang on a recognisable character whose online attention is meant to lift the price, which makes them volatile; it points to the Hawk Tuah token and to coins launched by Caitlyn Jenner, Jason Derulo and Iggy Azalea, which all drew backlash after crashing.
Commenters compared the character to Lord Farquaad from Shrek and to Wallace and Gromit. Many pointed out that the clips were synthetic, while others said they felt cheated to learn it, and a few still hoped he was a real person.
