The Television Academy has written artificial intelligence into the rules for the 78th Emmy Awards. A new statement lets the Academy ask entrants how AI was used in a submission, and says its awards stay focused on human storytelling whatever tools were involved.

The clause does not ban AI or define a threshold; it reserves the right to question. Nothing in the announcement says how the Academy would ask, what answers would disqualify a show, or whether any AI use must be declared up front.

The statement arrived in a wider package of changes: the TV movie award becomes Outstanding Movie, sound mixing for nonfiction and reality is split in two, short-form categories are reorganised, and new crew titles such as associate casting director and key costumer become eligible.

The 2026 Primetime Emmys were set for September 14, with the Creative Arts ceremonies on September 5 and 6, making this the first cycle in which submissions could be questioned about AI use.
