Deezer and Sacem, the French society of authors, composers and music publishers, have launched Sacem Play, a background-music service for independent shops, ZDNET France reports, and the outlet frames it as their answer to the spread of AI-generated music. It describes the service as offering tracks certified as fully human-made, so that real artists are paid.

Deezer says the offer gives merchants a simple interface and set-up for music suited to their business and setting, starting with an activation and trial path. It adds to Deezer's existing products for large companies and multi-zone sites, which ZDNET reads as retail chains. The company's announcement stresses a clear framework that pays creators and rights holders, and notes that Sacem uses Deezer's tool for detecting music made entirely by AI.

ZDNET places the launch in a wider split. Deezer has long opposed fully AI-made tracks and regularly publishes how many it detects and excludes, while the outlet says Spotify has made room for AI artists in its catalogue and recommendations. In shops, it says, the line is already giving way: several firms generate AI music for commercial premises and some supermarkets have tried it, drawn by lower licence fees, music tailored to the setting and exclusive content.

That shift means lost income for artists and for an industry that relies on licensing. Sacem called in May for public authorities to do more to protect authors and artists from tech companies using their work to build AI models.
