Synopsis

Nightborne opens as a documentary assembled from interviews, recovered program footage and recordings. A U.S. Army pilot is shot down and declared killed in action, and her husband buries an empty casket. The tapes, the film's tagline says, tell a different story.

As the evidence builds, the pilot appears to have been part of a classified military program, named Project Nightborne in one write-up, that resurrects fallen soldiers and sends them back into combat. The film leans on recordings from a scientist who left that program, and the husband's loss may not be a loss at all.

The main figures are the pilot, her grieving husband, and the interviewees and scientist who piece the program together. The tone is sci-fi horror played as a documentary and found footage, setting a classified military program against a family's private grief. Its themes are soldiers sent back into combat after death and what the program takes from the people who mourn them.

About the Show

Nightborne is a 13-minute sci-fi horror short directed by Neill Blomkamp, the filmmaker behind District 9, Elysium and Chappie. It is presented as the first release from Barley Studios, his new AI film studio, and was posted to YouTube in July 2026 (19 July in some time zones, 20 July in others, per coverage). It can be watched free on the Barley Studios YouTube channel and on Blomkamp's Instagram.

Press reports say every frame was generated with Seedance 2.0, a video generation model, with Blomkamp directing shot by shot through text prompts. Blomkamp says it was made with real concept artists and features the faces and voices of 32 real people, whom the YouTube description says were used under likeness agreements. One write-up names concept artists Nikolas Gekko and Werner Pretorius, writer-producer Terri Tatchell, producer Steven St. Arnaud and editor Austyn Daines, and credits Havenhurst Entertainment in association with Barley Studios. The pages do not give a budget, the number of generations or the production time.

Blomkamp has said he has experimented with AI for a couple of years. He called Nightborne "the first full test AI film I have made" and said Barley Studios would be his studio for making his own AI films, in the way Oats Studios was for traditional film and visual effects.

The film went out on YouTube and Instagram, and Blomkamp announced it on X. The record shows about 296,500 views on the YouTube upload when read on 6 October 2026, and about 169,000 views on his Instagram reel and 82,400 on the Barley Studios reel on the same day. Outlets including The Decoder, Dark Horizons, The Playlist and JoBlo covered the release at once.

Reception was largely negative in the pieces read. Aftermath's Luke Plunkett called it "awful in ways I don't need or want to describe" and described the actors and action as "soulless". An article on AI Films reports that Gizmodo praised the footage's realism, saying it looked nearly like real 8K camera footage, but found it emotionally hollow. The Playlist noted that the purpose of the experiment was unclear beyond posting it online, and The Decoder pointed to continuing skepticism in creative industries over training data, jobs, copyright and quality.

On why it matters, the coverage frames it as a first for a well-known feature director: The Decoder calls it Blomkamp's first entirely AI-generated short, and Blomkamp says on X that he wants to make a full-length feature in the same format. One write-up says the short is a proof of concept for a planned 90-minute AI feature.
