Is Miquela AI?
Yes. Miquela (Lil Miquela) is a computer-generated virtual singer and influencer created by Trevor McFedries and Sara DeCou at the Los Angeles startup Brud, not a real person.
Every page that discusses her says Miquela is a made character, not a person. Wikipedia describes a fictional teenage Instagram model presented as a CGI character, and says Brud, the startup led by McFedries and DeCou, was revealed as her maker in April 2018, after a staged 'hack' of her account by another Brud character, Bermuda. Variety calls her a 'CGI-generated teen robot' and 'the invention of startup Brud'. Brud's own line, quoted on virtualhumans.org, is that she is not human but a robot. That robot is part of the story. What the pages actually establish is that the images are computer-made and that a company runs the account.
The main open question is her voice. Variety reported in 2020 that nobody knows who sings as Miquela. A Brud rep would only say she uses 'pitch-correction tools and other software', which leaves room for a human singer whose voice is processed. No page we read names one, and none names a human model or performer behind the images. Her songs credit human collaborators such as Baauer and Teyana Taylor, but as producers and featured artists, not as Miquela herself.
A note on wording: Miquela started in 2016 and the sources call her CGI or virtual. None of them says she is made with today's generative AI tools. She is a synthetic, company-run persona with no named human behind her, which is what this verdict means. Who writes her posts and who voices her is still unknown.
Evidence
Variety calls Miquela 'the freckle-faced, CGI-generated teen robot' and 'the invention of startup Brud', and reports that it is unknown who provides her voice.
variety.comWikipedia says the Instagram character is presented as a CGI character and that, after Bermuda's 2018 'hack', both were revealed as characters created by the Los Angeles startup Brud.
en.wikipedia.orgA Brud rep told Variety that Miquela 'uses pitch-correction tools and other software to make sure she's nailing her performance', without naming any human singer.
variety.comVirtualhumans.org lists Miquela as a virtual influencer, quotes Brud saying 'She's a robot', and gives her Instagram bio as 'Change-seeking robot with the drip'.
