Summary

Yang Mun is an AI-generated virtual influencer portraying an elderly Buddhist monk in orange robes who delivers short talks on Qi, balance, inner harmony and Chinese medicine. VirtualHumans.org, in a January 2026 profile, calls him an AI-generated virtual influencer and names Shalev H (@shalevhvs) as the creator behind him, a creator who describes himself as the architect behind the most viral AI characters on X. The same article says the character is built with ChatGPT for scripts, Nano Banana for images, ElevenLabs for the voice and HeyGen for the lip-synced video; no human is named as voicing or performing him. VirtualHumans lists his origin as Thailand, while his YouTube About page says he was born in the mountains of China.

The article reports more than 2.5 million Instagram followers, over 400 million organic views across platforms and, by the creator's own claim, more than $300,000 in profit within 90 days, and notes criticism that the account does not disclose the monk is artificial. The maker sells meditation and breathwork programmes and books through yang-mun.com. The Instagram feed runs at three to five reels a day, with a roughly eight-minute YouTube video every two days; TikTok has been quiet since July 2026. On 1 October 2026 the Instagram account showed 2.5 million followers and 404 posts, the YouTube channel 160K subscribers and 128 videos, and the TikTok account 71.9K followers and 397.8K likes.

Is Yang Mun AI?

Yes. Yang Mun is an AI-generated elderly Buddhist monk character made by Shalev Hani, an Israel-based marketer who calls himself a digital creator and AI storyteller. No real monk or human performer appears in the videos.

Two separate outlets say the monk is not real, and they name the same person behind him. In March 2026 Columbia News Service reported that Yang Mun is an AI-generated monk created by Shalev Hani, an Israel-based marketer. Hani says he has made more than $300,000 since he launched the character in October 2025. A January 2026 VirtualHumans.org piece credits the same creator, writing as Shalev H, and gives his own account of the tools he uses: ChatGPT writes the scripts, Nano Banana makes the images, ElevenLabs makes the voice and HeyGen does the lip-synced video. That means the face, the voice and the words are all generated. Neither outlet names an actor, voice artist or real monk.

The account has not always been open about this. Columbia News Service found AI labels on some Instagram videos but not on others. It also reported that the website then insisted "Yang Mun is a real person", and that one video gives him a made-up life story: born in a Chinese village in 1939, moved to Kansas as a child. The website now calls him "a digital teacher" and no longer makes that claim. Buddhist scholars quoted by Columbia News Service called the character deceptive.

The evidence is strong. The creator's own statements and independent reporting agree. Hani turned down Columbia News Service's request for an interview, so his account of how the character is made comes from his public posts, not from a conversation with a reporter.

Evidence

  • Columbia News Service reports that Yang Mun is an AI-generated monk created by Shalev Hani, an Israel-based marketer and self-described AI storyteller. It says Hani launched the character in October 2025.

  • VirtualHumans.org quotes creator Shalev H saying he is the one behind the character. He says he built it with ChatGPT for scripts, Nano Banana for images, ElevenLabs for the voice and HeyGen for lip-synced video.

  • Columbia News Service found that some of Yang Mun's Instagram videos carry AI info tags and others do not. It reports that his website at the time insisted that "Yang Mun is a real person".

  • Yang Mun's own website describes him as "a digital teacher for the kitchen table". The same site sells his $49.99 30-day healing journey, books and bundles.
