Biography

Max Martin is the professional name of Karl Martin Sandberg, a Swedish record producer and songwriter born on 26 February 1971. He came to prominence in the late 1990s with songwriting credits on a run of pop hits, among them Britney Spears's "...Baby One More Time" (1998), the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" (1999), Celine Dion's "That's the Way It Is" (1999) and NSYNC's "It's Gonna Be Me" (2000).

Wikipedia counts 31 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles that he has written or co-written, 29 of them produced or co-produced by him, an all-time record for the chart as of June 2026. His later credits include Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" (2008) and "Roar" (2013), Maroon 5's "One More Night" (2012), Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off", "Blank Space" (2014) and "The Fate of Ophelia" (2025), Ariana Grande's "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)" (2024), and The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" (2019) and "Save Your Tears" (2020).

He has written the second-most number-one singles on the chart, behind only Paul McCartney, having passed John Lennon with his 27th in March 2024, and "Blinding Lights" is named the best-performing song in the chart's history. Many of his hits were gathered in the 2019 jukebox musical & Juliet.

The Hollywood Reporter tallied his single sales at over 135 million copies by early 2013, and Variety put his net worth at about $260 million in 2017. He has won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year award a record 11 times, five Grammy Awards including Producer of the Year, and has been nominated for an Academy Award and two Golden Globes.
