Biography
Łukasz Sebastian Gottwald, born 26 September 1973 in Providence, Rhode Island, is an American musician, songwriter and record producer known professionally as Dr. Luke, Tyson Trax and Made in China. His father, an architect, was born in Łask, Poland. He grew up largely in New York City, taught himself guitar at 13, and attended the Manhattan School of Music for two years.
He began his professional career as lead guitarist of the Saturday Night Live Band, a post he held from 1996 to 2007. In 2004 he produced Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" with Max Martin, and later collaborated with the producers Cirkut and Benny Blanco.
He went on to co-write and produce hits including Pink's "Who Knew" (2006), Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" (2007) and Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" (2008), then reunited with Clarkson for "My Life Would Suck Without You" (2009). By January 2011 he had 21 Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 singles, third most for a producer, and ASCAP named him Producer and Songwriter of the Year from 2009 to 2011. He was Grammy-nominated for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.
He founded Kemosabe Records, which signed Kesha, Doja Cat, Becky G and Juicy J among others, and Amigo Records, home to Kim Petras and Joy Oladokun. He owns the publishing companies Kasz Money Publishing and Prescription Songs. In 2014 he and Kesha became involved in a series of lawsuits, in which she alleged abuse and employment discrimination and he claimed breach of contract and defamation. The case was settled out of court in June 2023.
