Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt testified at the Utah Capitol for H.B. 286, a bill from Republican state representative Doug Fiefia that would oblige AI companies to publish safety and child-protection plans for their chatbots. The House committee hearing it voted unanimously to advance it.
As described, the bill would require public safety reports, plain warnings about AI risks, incident reporting when things go wrong and protection for employees who raise safety concerns. Gordon-Levitt spoke as a father of three, accused AI firms of putting profit first and said states must act while Congress has not. Fiefia cited the case of a teenager whose conversations with ChatGPT preceded his suicide.
The appearance continues a run of AI activism by the actor, including a video criticising Meta's chatbots, a public rebuke of California's governor over a vetoed child-safety bill, and his signature on the "Stealing Isn't Innovation" artists' campaign. He is also co-writing and set to direct a Netflix film about AI with Rachel McAdams.
