iQIYI has launched a plan to make and release 100 AI documentaries within a year, backed by a first-phase fund of 50 million yuan, it announced at its documentary conference in Guangzhou on 23 September. Guangdong Radio and Television and several production firms co-invest, and iQIYI will handle distribution and streaming.
The first 12 titles cover food, history, science, crime and folklore, led by an AI version of Guangdong TV's long-running food series Lao Guang De Wei Dao. Its team said the new version will draw on eleven seasons of real footage and stories rather than generate finished episodes outright.
iQIYI said it added over 900 documentaries in the past year, more than 50 of them AI projects, and that its AI factual output from June to September rose sharply on its live-action output of earlier months.
