South African singer and producer Credo V Daniels has hit back at critics who say artificial intelligence is doing the singing on his debut album, Still Where We Were, days after the record disappeared from Apple Music.

The row grew after a live TV performance went viral and viewers said his voice sounded nothing like his recordings. Neither Apple nor the artist has said why the album was removed, so whether it relates to the AI debate, a distribution problem or something else is unconfirmed.

Daniels, 38, whose real name is Credo Daniel Mandlhazi and who comes from Germiston in Ekurhuleni, worked as a producer for well-known South African acts before releasing songs such as Sedilaka, Ngafa and Njalo Njalo. Speaking to the Daily Sun, he said listeners care about the result more than the process, and that people use the word AI without understanding how records are made. He described a chain of stages, from lyrics and vocals to composition and final production, that critics fold into one accusation.

He accepts that AI is part of his workflow but says it supports decisions he makes himself. The real ethical line, he argued, is using someone's existing work without consent.
