An AI-illustrated manga has become a best seller on Comic CmoA, Japan's largest e-book store. My Dear Wife, Will You Be My Lover?, credited to a creator called mamaya and released by Studio Zoom in four volumes on 28 December, reached first place in the young adult chart and ninth overall, Bleeding Cool reports. Its store listing says plainly that its images were made with AI.
The story follows a 35-year-old office worker trying to win back his wife after their marriage goes cold. Readers rate it about 3.1 stars, citing character art that looks copied from panel to panel onto flat backgrounds and pages so wordy they read more like a novel, though some praise the polished look. The first chapter is free to read.
Its sales have alarmed creators. Mob Psycho 100 editor Kazuaki Ishibashi observed on X that ordinary readers seem not to care how it was made. Others fear a flood of cheap AI work, suspect rigged rankings or call for a boycott. Bleeding Cool calls it the first big commercial comics hit to rely openly on AI art, and expects more unless the store changes its rules.
