Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that AI tools were used in making Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, its Unreal Engine 5 reimagining of the 1996 original, after players found an AI-generated content disclosure on the game's Steam page following the release of its latest trailer, ComicBook reports. The disclosure says AI-assisted tools supported some early exploration and temporary content during development, without saying exactly what was produced that way. The remake is meant to lead into Lara Croft's next new adventure, Tomb Raider: Catalyst.

In a statement, the studio said it uses AI to help its teams try out ideas faster and more efficiently, and that everything in the finished game is made by people. That has not satisfied some fans, who have said on social media that they are dropping plans to buy it and have urged others to do likewise. Their point is that concept work and pre-production count among the most creative stages of building a game, so AI use there matters even if every placeholder is later replaced by human work.

The row is part of a wider dispute over AI in games. Storefront disclosures such as Steam's have become more common as publishers try to be open about generative tools, and studios facing rising budgets and longer schedules see AI as a way to save time and money. ComicBook adds that boycotts and online pressure have had some effect, but that some studios leave AI-made content in finished games and others never disclose it, which gets harder to spot as the tools improve. Plenty of players remain keen on the remake, and some are unaware of the debate.
