Synopsis
Trace Project is a 64-minute science-fiction feature set in a fictionalised Singapore of the late 2030s. Lin Jia Jun, a young man raised in public housing, becomes the country's first astronaut to set foot on Mars, sent under a "Mars Footprints Program" as Earth's ecosystem is collapsing and a global resettlement effort begins.
A cognitive brain-link lets him share his emotions in real time with Chen Hui Min, who follows him from Earth. Mars turns out to be a brutal test of survival rather than the promised land, and Lin struggles between his sense of national duty and his longing for home.
The story asks whether humanity's future lies in leaving Earth or in protecting it. Its creator has said she reads it as less about space than about ambition and the gap between an imagined future and reality, and as a Singapore story about a country that has long thought beyond its physical limits.

Trace Project is a 64-minute AI-generated science-fiction feature from FizzDragon, a Singapore-based studio that calls itself the world's first AIGC (artificial intelligence generated content) film production company. It premiered on 9 August 2026, Singapore's National Day, in a single public screening at 2pm in Hall 4 of Golden Village VivoCity. After the premiere it was to be offered on FizzDragon's own app.
The coverage names no outside AI model. Stomp reports that the film used FizzDragon's own creative tools, and that about 10 people from three countries worked on it. Mothership says the studio describes the project as an experiment in whether a small team using generative tools can make stories that traditionally would not get made. The story began as a novel written by the studio's founder.
FizzDragon was founded by Pax Chen, an NUS electrical engineering graduate who once wanted to pursue aerospace engineering (Stomp gives the founder's name as Zhuo Chen). The team was far smaller than the one behind the studio's previous feature, Pirate Queen: Zheng Yi Sao, which involved more than 130 creators in 13 countries.
On release, the National Day date was, according to Chen, suggested by a senior figure at the Singapore Film Society. After the premiere the film was to go onto the FizzDragon app, with distribution confirmed in Malaysia and the United States and more markets planned. The film's main YouTube video had 33,789 views when read on 6 October 2026, and the studio's trailer, posted on 7 August, had 4,503.
Reception online was largely negative. Commenters called it "AI slop", and Stomp lists complaints about dialogue that did not match the subtitles, inconsistent accents and distorted Singapore flags. Writer-director Arvind Jay called the screening a "total farce" and a "slap in the face" to local artists. Society chairman Kenneth Tan said it "did not suggest anything to anyone" about whether or when to screen the film. Chen called the film an "experiment" and said not everyone would like it; Daphne Neo, who attended the screening, called it a "great AI movie" on Instagram.
Mothership frames the film as a marker of how fast Singapore's creative sector is adopting AI and as a prompt for public debate about AI in culture, noting that regulators are tightening transparency and labelling expectations for generative media.
Audience sentiment
Overwhelmingly negative: viewers attack the AI look, the dialogue and accents, and the lack of Singaporean identity; a small minority praise its ambition and story

“Hi, the plot is interesting to say the least, but I think the reason why people are critiquing the movie so much is because you guys may have come up with the plot, characters, and script yourself, but have not really put in effort to make a MOVIE. Essentially…”View post on YouTube
