Synopsis
Crownless & Bound is set in late 16th-century England, where a young commoner finds a rare gemstone. That discovery is the hinge of the story, which is adapted from a single scene in a novel its director wrote.
The whole film plays out inside one building, so the drama stays confined to a single place and the people who pass through it. The pages give no character names, no fuller plot and no ending, so the story is left at its premise and setting.

About the Show
Crownless & Bound is a 12-minute AI-assisted short film directed by Taylor Matter of the United States, made in 2026. It had its world premiere at the AI International Film Festival's September 12 winners event in Hollywood, and the festival lists it for on-demand viewing through its Eventive channel. A 38-second trailer is on YouTube, credited as directed by Taylor Matter and Ruben ACP.
The film is adapted from a scene in a novel Matter wrote. He built its single setting in 3D first: the building was modelled in Blender and textured in Adobe Substance 3D Painter, then photography was projected onto the geometry and inpainted until the surfaces held. Only after that did he shoot inside the space, using Seedance and Runway for picture. AudioStack, Suno and ElevenLabs handled the sound. Asked from the audience what it cost, Matter said about $900.
The festival's winners event screened five films from five countries in one afternoon, chosen from more than 100 submissions. The festival says it has curated AI film since 2021 and is run by The AI Project, a California nonprofit led by Bert Holland as founder and executive director.
The festival page says Crownless & Bound won Best Short Director and Best Story from the jury and Most Surprising from the audience. The trailer was uploaded to YouTube on 5 September 2026 and showed 29 views when read on 12 October 2026. No press reviews or interviews with Matter turned up beyond the festival's listings.
