Synopsis
A Face Only a Mother Could Love is an eight-minute drama set in Paris. Its hero, Marcel Dupont, is a solitary dancer born with a facial malformation, and every morning for 38 years his mother told him he was beautiful. He carries that certainty through a city that looks away from him, and the film is built on the gap between how he sees himself and how the world sees him.
Each evening Marcel dances alone with one hand raised, as if for a partner who is not there. His days pass in quiet isolation, and the film follows that routine until one Halloween, when a woman who has quietly watched him for years decides to approach him. She sits down beside him in a park and stays, and a deep bond begins to form between them.
The tone is tender and wordless in places, carried by a narrator over images of the city, and its themes are a mother's unconditional love, loneliness, how appearance shapes the way strangers treat us, and the courage it takes to cross the distance to another person.

A Face Only a Mother Could Love is an eight-minute AI-generated short drama, released on YouTube on 23 April 2026 under the title "A Face Only A Mother Could Love | AI Short Film | 2026 Grand Prix Winner Runway AIFF". It was written, directed and produced by the Toronto filmmaker Robert Gaudette, and it is free to watch on his YouTube upload.
Gaudette told Reply that he began it as an experiment, from a story he had written earlier, and had not planned to enter festivals. He said AI was the only practical way to put the script on screen without a budget, cast or crew. Reply's release names Grok, Nano Banana and Seedance as the tools, and the upload's description credits ElevenLabs voice synthesis for the narration and Suno for the music, with dialogue first generated with lip-sync inside the video prompts and then redubbed to keep the voices consistent. He says he kept the characters coherent by generating AI character sheets and writing a detailed prompt for each shot covering camera movement, colour and mood. The Hollywood Reporter says the model handles only about 5 to 8 seconds at a time, so he built scenes of 30 seconds or more by discarding and regenerating until shots matched, a process he compares to pulling a slot machine. Reporting relayed by Let's Data Science puts the work at about two weeks of 17-hour days.
Gaudette is a filmmaker with no formal film training who leads Nolia Studios, a Toronto AI-native film studio launched with the producer Kirk Hipkiss, whose Radical Point Media supplies production infrastructure and works on CG and AI-driven projects for clients that TV Technology lists as Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery and A+E Global Media. The studio's slate includes an animated property in development, The Little Cloud Thief.
The film premiered in North America at the Runway AI Festival 2026 at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in New York on 11 June, where it won the $50,000 Grand Prix. On 6 September it took first place at the third Reply AI Film Festival, presented at the Match Point Arena in Venice during the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, chosen from more than 3,000 submissions from 76 countries, ten of them finalists, by a jury chaired by the Oscar-winning director Gabriele Salvatores that included Rob Minkoff and Catherine Hardwicke. Gaudette called the win surreal, as if he had changed timelines. TV Technology also lists Best Picture at the OMNI International Film Festival, Best AI Film at the New York International Film Awards and the David Harold Blackwell Award for AI & Emerging Technology Film at the Eudaimonia Project Film Festival. The upload had 14,272 views when the catalogue last read it on 5 October 2026.
Press coverage treats it as a test case for AI filmmaking. The Hollywood Reporter frames Gaudette as seen by some as cinema's great hope in an automated age and by others as its greatest threat, and TV Technology calls the short one of the most recognised AI films of the year. Coverage of the Runway festival, as relayed by secondary write-ups, said the winner was praised for its emotion.
