Biography
Dr. Joseph Suglia describes himself on his own site as a novelist, short-story writer, playwright, literary critic and philosophical commentator, and names the novels Watch Out: The Final Version and Table 41 as his main books. Director Steve Balderson earlier adapted his novel Watch Out into a feature of the same name, which Wikipedia says premiered at London's Raindance Film Festival.
Suglia wrote BRAINSTARE first as a play and then as the screenplay for Balderson's 2025 feature, a sci-fi thriller in which an employee's mind is scanned in a corporate world where consciousness can be bought and sold; Amazon also lists a book of Brainstare under his name. Balderson told FilmInk he storyboarded and designed the film as if prepping a live-action shoot, generating its 'actors' and sets with AI, and had to work around model content filters to get Suglia's script on screen as written. A January 2026 press release says every word of the script is spoken in the film and that its imagery, performances, voices and music were all AI-generated.
Suglia's site presents BRAINSTARE as the first narrative feature that is entirely human-created yet realised by artificial intelligence. The film, about 2 hours 17 minutes long, was a 2026 Official Selection of the Brooklyn Sci-Fi Film Fest, and a June 2026 review at 366 Weird Movies faulted its slow pacing and soap-opera dialogue.
