A synthetic voice built from voice actor Yuki Kaji's own voice has a speaking role in a new episode of Fuji TV's anthology Yo nimo Kimyō na Monogatari (Tales of the Unusual), which began streaming on the FOD service on 26 September.
The character, Soyogi, voices Arete, an AI smart speaker that stands accused in a courtroom and asks to be tried as a person. Kaji recorded none of the lines; the voice was generated in advance and refined remotely before filming. It is the series' first AI voice performer.
Soyogi comes from Kaji's Soyogi Fractal project, set up to use voice AI on terms the performer controls.
