WildBrain has acknowledged using AI tools to restore episodes of the 1989 Super Mario Bros. Super Show! now airing on MeTV Toons, after viewers said the upscaled cartoons looked smeared and lost their hand-made texture. Press materials for the broadcast never mentioned AI.
In a statement to Cartoon Brew, the distributor called the work "human-led, AI-assisted", used to lift resolution and colour on older library titles, and said outside professionals rather than its own studio handle it.
WildBrain said results were mostly good, but decades-old source material sometimes gives the tools too little to go on, causing visible distortions. It is reviewing the episodes and fixing faults.
