Warner Music Group confirmed on June 10 that it has bought Sureel, a Palo Alto start-up that tracks how copyrighted music shows up in AI training data and in what AI models generate. Terms were not disclosed.
Sureel was founded in 2022 by Tamay Aykut, formerly chief technology officer at Snowcrash. Its tools let rights holders opt out of training or cap how much a track may influence generated output, and it says it can test unlicensed models to estimate whether a catalogue was used without a deal. It will keep running as a standalone service, and Warner flagged plans to extend its attribution to video and images.
Chief executive Robert Kyncl framed the purchase as keeping creators in control of their music, name, likeness and voice while opening new AI revenue. Warner is the major most open to AI partnerships, Suno included, and the deal lands as Sony, Universal and streaming services build their own detection and labelling.
