Warner Bros. removed a behind-the-scenes Supergirl video from YouTube after an angry online reaction to a four-second shot that seemed to show director Craig Gillespie using generative AI to settle the look of Lobo, Film Stories reports. In the clip, Gillespie and Jason Momoa study a laptop showing about a dozen images of the character that resemble Momoa.
The outlet says it cannot confirm the images were generated rather than edited by hand, though one has the glossy, uncanny look associated with AI, and Warner had not responded. Clips of the moment kept circulating after the deletion.
It capped a bad week for the studio's marketing, which days earlier had promoted its dinosaur film The End Of Oak Street with an AI-made "podcast" hosted by talking dogs.
Supergirl, released in June, underperformed, and DC Studios' Peter Safran has conceded it fell short; it had just reached digital release, with discs due in September, when the AI label attached to it.
