Universal Music Group, Concord, ABKCO and other music publishers have filed a new federal copyright suit against Anthropic, accusing it of downloading unauthorized copies of their lyrics and sheet music from pirate "shadow libraries" by torrent.
They argue the downloading was infringement in itself, whatever Anthropic later used for training. The complaint lists more than 700 works, among them "Sweet Caroline" and "Viva La Vida"; the publishers put the total at over 20,000 songs and potential statutory damages above $3 billion.
The suit builds on their 2023 case over Claude learning to write lyrics from their songs. Anthropic has denied infringement before and did not comment.
