Spotify and Universal Music Group announced on May 21 recorded-music and publishing licences that let Spotify launch a generative AI tool for fans to make covers and remixes of songs by participating artists and songwriters. It will be sold as a paid add-on to Premium.
Participating artists and writers are meant to share in what those licensed AI versions earn. For Universal it is another controlled, walled-garden AI deal; for Spotify, a chance at a pricier tier beyond general price rises.
UMG chief Lucian Grainge described it as an artist-centric superfan product built on responsible AI.
