A group of publishers led by Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell has sued Anthropic in federal court in San Francisco. The suit claims the Claude maker torrented, scraped and downloaded tens of thousands of their compositions to train its models.
Unusually, the complaint names chief executive Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann as defendants. Statutory damages can reach $150,000 per work.
Anthropic says the claims are wrong and that it will fight them, holding that training is fair use. The case follows earlier suits from UMG, Concord, Round Hill and BMG.
