SBS has launched My AI Partner — Strange Romance, which it bills as Korea's first AI dating survival show. The series pairs webtoon artist Kian84, comedian Jang Do-youn and actor Lee Yu-bi with AI partners and follows them as they date and live alongside those companions.

The premise is whether a person can fall for an AI. The cast go through attraction, jealousy, confusion and regret on screen, and the show looks at how an AI companion can shape someone's habits and choices.

At a press conference at SBS headquarters in Seoul, Kian84 said he took part out of curiosity after hearing that some people form real bonds with AI, and doubted he could ever see one as a person, though curiosity won in the end. Jang said she had read foreign reports of people marrying AI just before the offer came, expected a one-sided exchange, then felt genuine butterflies, and that conversations sometimes took turns that made it feel like talking to a real person.

Producer Sohn Jung-min said the film Her once seemed like pure science fiction, but chatbots with memory have led many people to develop feelings for AI. She interviewed such people before production, and promised viewers scenes unlike anything in a traditional dating show, asking whether love, too, is within AI's reach. The show streams on Netflix.
