Midjourney, sued by Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. over images of characters such as Yoda, has asked a federal judge to widen what the studios must reveal about their own use of generative AI. The company accuses the studios of hypocrisy for suing over tools it says they use themselves.

An earlier ruling limited that discovery to consumer-facing tools. In its latest filing Midjourney argues this lets the studios cherry-pick documents that support their claims of market harm while withholding ones that could help its defence, and says that behind closed doors they do what they accuse it of doing. It wants the ruling overturned so the studios have to show how much AI goes into their productions.

Its lawyer, Bobby Ghajar, argues that if studios train image models on unlicensed work for storyboarding or ideas, that would support its fair use and unclean hands defences and show such training is industry custom. Midjourney does not deny the core allegations and says training is fair use.

The studios call the requests a fishing expedition. Their lawyer, David Singer, says they only want Midjourney to stop copying their films and shows and spreading their characters without permission.
