A fan account on Instagram, "Mia Goth | Fan Page", posted an AI-generated selfie on 8 October showing the actress in a cropped shirt that reads "My Ex Is My Biggest Fan". Coverage took it as a jab at her estranged husband Shia LaBeouf, and the image spread widely.
“The fact that this fan account meets Instagram’s criteria to qualify for a ‘blue check’ is disconcerting on a fundamental level.”
Representative for Mia Goth, to The Verge, as reported by TheWrap · thewrap.com ↗
The account is verified with a blue check and has more than a million followers, among them Elle Fanning and Lana Del Rey. Goth's representative said she owns no social media account on any platform and is not active on Instagram, and that several complaints have been sent to the company asking for the account to be taken down.
Her team also took aim at the platform itself: it found it disconcerting that a fan page of this kind qualifies for verification, and suggested Instagram puts forged images ahead of protecting a public figure's likeness. The outlets differ on where the statement went, TheWrap saying it was given to The Verge and MEAWW saying JustJared.
The timing is awkward. MEAWW reports that Goth filed for divorce on 6 October after a marriage that began in 2016, while TheWrap only says "last week". TheWrap also points to Scarlett Johansson's 2024 dispute with OpenAI over a voice resembling hers as a comparable case, and says it has asked Goth's team for more comment.
