VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas told ScreenRant no generative AI was used anywhere in the Disney+ series, saying there was no need. The report reads the answer as a quiet rebuke from within an industry still arguing over where the tools belong.
The report notes Marvel's history: in 2023 it defended an AI-made title sequence for Secret Invasion while its own actors and writers were striking partly over that technology, which makes a series about an android pointedly made without it notable.
The show's retro-futurist look imitates how AI renders images, but was made by hand by production designer Will Hughes-Jones's team, turning AI into the show's subject rather than a shortcut. Matalas, who revived Star Trek: Picard, is known for legacy characters and analogue texture, an unusual match for a studio associated with volume.
The eight-episode series completes the arc begun by WandaVision and Agatha All Along. It premieres October 14, with Paul Bettany as the synthezoid rebuilding his identity and James Spader back as Ultron.
