Lionel Richie has filed four US trademark applications for sound marks of his own voice speaking lines from his hits: Hello, Say You, Say Me, Easy and All Night Long. Each describes a man saying the phrase, tied to uses such as entertainment services, stage shows and interviews.
The filings follow voice and likeness applications by Taylor Swift and Matthew McConaughey, and AI soundalikes are the clear motive. IP firm Gerben IP warned that such rarely seen applications may face significant legal hurdles.
McConaughey already holds several of these marks, one filed in 2023, and a revised No Fakes Act was put before Congress in May.
