Michel Hazanavicius, the Oscar-winning director of The Artist, has wrapped The Third Hand, and AI was used to make one of its big scenes, a notable step for a Cannes regular.
Vincent Maraval, chief executive of French sales and production company Goodfellas, said the film's First World War battlefield opening took two days to shoot with AI instead of ten.
The film follows a wounded French soldier who wakes in a mad scientist's lab with a German hand grafted onto his abdomen; Bérénice Bejo, Rebecca Marder and François Civil star.
Asked about lost jobs, Maraval called it the director's decision and said AI can widen what filmmakers can afford. He argued AI can widen filmmakers' imagination and also make films more profitable. World of Reel wonders whether Cannes will risk it in competition next May given the backlash.
