YouTuber Hank Green has published a personal policy on how he uses AI, after viewers caught him relying on it too heavily. He presented the rules on August 7 on vlogbrothers, the channel he shares with his brother John.
It started with a July 29 video for his nonprofit channel Complexly, where he said "I appreciate the pushback" to an empty room, a stock chatbot phrase that made viewers suspect a generated script. Green replied that he had worked under heavy pressure and used ChatGPT for research. On Reddit he wrote that leaning on AI had hurt his work, apologised to his audience, and paused his personal channel.
The policy does not stop him using language models. It commits him to coming up with his own video ideas and writing his own scripts, and commenters mostly welcomed it while noting the gap.
Tubefilter asks whether other creators will follow. AI thumbnails, idea generators, scripted videos and YouTube's own avatar tools are common, yet disclosure is rare unless an AI company is paying, and platform auto-labels do not cover scripts or research.
