South Korea's Gyeonggi province says its international Korea AI Content Awards, a competition for films and videos made with generative AI, received 1,528 entries. After expert judging, 20 have been shortlisted for the finals, roughly the top 1% of the field.
Works were submitted between June 1 and July 22 in short and mid-length film sections and for a Nam June Paik Special Award, which honours experimental work in the spirit of the media-art pioneer and has drawn particular interest in cultural circles. Eleven prizes will be given: six for shorts, three for mid-length films and two Paik awards.
The finals run for two days from October 15 at Lotte Cinema in Suwon, with theatrical screenings, audience sessions with the filmmakers and an industry forum on how AI is changing production.
Kang Ji-sook, who heads the province's content industry division, said the entry count was far beyond what organisers expected and showed global appetite for making work with AI. She said she hoped the screenings and forum would show what human creativity and AI can do together.
