Artificial, Luca Guadagnino's film about Sam Altman's firing and rehiring at OpenAI, will premiere at Alice Tully Hall on 5 October as part of the New York Film Festival. Andrew Garfield plays Altman, with Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati and Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, from a script by Simon Rich. The film became a story in its own right in June when Amazon MGM dropped it a few months after Amazon signed a fifty-billion-dollar partnership with OpenAI; Neon picked it up. Festival director Dennis Lim called it a sly and sobering account of how we reached the AI precipice. Guadagnino opened last year's festival with After the Hunt; this year the lineup also includes James Gray's Paper Tiger and Tony Gilroy's Behemoth!.
