Google has taken a stake of about $75 million in A24, its first in a film studio, tied to a research deal in which Google DeepMind and A24 will develop AI tools for making and releasing films.
Facing criticism, A24 says the aim is to give artists a say in which tools get built rather than have them imposed.
The deal is multiyear and non-exclusive and does not open A24's film library to Google. A24 last raised money two years ago, when Thrive put in a similar sum at a $3.5 billion valuation.
Some of its own filmmakers are hostile, including Backrooms director Kane Parsons, who has said he would wipe out generative AI if he could.
