Two features made with generative AI, Alex Proyas's Heaven and Roger Avary's Paradise Lost, are set for US cinema releases in 2027, Film Stories reports, citing Deadline. It would give audiences their first real chance to judge AI-assisted features from established filmmakers on a big screen.

Both use visuals from Ex Machina Studios, which describes itself as pairing human stories and performances with an AI production pipeline. Ex Machina has a deal with a US chain to show these and other titles on about 1,500 screens across several major cities.

Paradise Lost, Avary's adaptation of Milton's poem, is due in spring 2027, and Heaven, a satire about a failing bureaucrat who escapes into a manufactured afterlife that turns out to be a trap, that summer. Neither has started shooting and both are still casting, according to Deadline, which leaves only months to turn the scripts into finished films; Film Stories suggests generated scenes make that timetable easier.

Both directors had struggled to get the projects made elsewhere. Proyas, known for The Crow and Dark City, has not released a feature since Gods Of Egypt in 2016; Avary, co-writer of Pulp Fiction and director of Killing Zoe, has directed little since his 2009 imprisonment, though he made the crime thriller Lucky Day in 2019.
