Early audiences for Eli Roth's horror film Ice Cream Man suspected its 1920s-style cartoons and an illustrated flashback were AI-generated. An AI visual effects firm, Dark Half, appears in the credits.
In a Polygon interview Roth described drawing the frames himself to match 1920s haunted Mickey Mouse cartoons, with animators smoothing the motion. A day later he told Polygon he had "misspoke" and that AI was used in a small part of a few scenes.
He has not said which scenes, how much of the finished film is AI-generated, or how the AI material was combined with artists' work, and neither he nor Dark Half answered follow-up questions.
