Synopsis

One Way is a five-minute AI short about a person who feels there is nothing left to lose and is ready to leave the world. Reply's festival write-up sums up the premise that way: when everything seems lost, life can still offer a second chance.

The story turns on that offer and on the question it raises, what the second chance will cost. The pages read give no scene-by-scene account, so the characters and the ending are not described here.

About the Show

One Way is a five-minute AI-made short film from 2024, directed by Egor Kharlamov from an idea by Filipp Ershov, according to the video's description on YouTube. Kharlamov is a Russian actor, director and animator. The film is on his YouTube channel, where it is titled "One way (Venice film festival)", and its release date in aipopdb is 6 September 2024.

No page read for this record names the AI models, tools or workflow behind the film, or says how much of it was human work and how much generated. In the festival's press release Kharlamov called AI an incredible breakthrough for making movies and animation, and said any technology is a tool in the hands of man.

One Way was a finalist at the first Reply AI Film Festival, an international competition for original short films made with AI, run by Reply with Mastercard as part of Reply Challenges. Reply says more than 1,000 short films came in from over 59 countries, and twelve were chosen as finalists. The finalists were invited to a Premiere Event in Venice during the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where their films were shown before the winners were announced on 4 September 2024 at the Priceless lounge of the Hotel Excelsior. The theme was "Synthetic Stories, Human Hearts".

The jury included Adam Kulick, Caleb and Shelby Ward of Curious Refuge, Denise Negri, Filippo Rizzante (Reply's Chief Technology Officer), Flavio Natalia, the duo Julien Vallee and Eve Duhamel, Monica Riccioni of Think Cattleya, the director and video artist Paul Trillo, and Rob Minkoff, co-director of The Lion King (1994). They placed One Way second, behind To Dear Me by Gisele Tong, which was named the overall winner, and ahead of Jinx by Mansha Totla in third.

On YouTube the film had 619 views when aipopdb read it on 6 October 2026, and the few comments readable under it were short and admiring.
