Biography
Walter Woodman is a member of shy kids, the Toronto indie pop band and filmmaking collective, with Patrick Cederberg and Matthew Hornick. He and Cederberg, Ryerson University film studies graduates, wrote and directed Noah as a class project, which Woodman told the Eyeopener took almost a year to make. Told entirely through a teenager's computer screen, it won Best Canadian Short Film at TIFF in 2013 and the Canadian Screen Award for Best Live Action Short Drama, after which the group signed with Anonymous Content.
Woodman wrote and directed Air Head (2024), a short about a man with a balloon for a head that shy kids made with OpenAI's Sora before the model was released; Leeding Lady Productions lists Cederberg as co-director. fxguide reports a three-person team made it in about two weeks, generating hundreds of text-prompted clips and then recolouring, retiming and upscaling them in post. Silicon Republic quoted Woodman saying the team was excited less by Sora's realism than by its ability to make things that are "totally surreal".
In an October 2024 post, The Grain reported that shy kids had secured major Hollywood representation and were developing a feature, AUTOBiOGRAPHY, about a compassionate AI that has an existential crisis after connecting to the internet.
