Rinna (りんな) is an AI persona launched by Microsoft Japan on LINE on 31 July 2015 as a chatbot with the personality of a Japanese high-school girl. Is Rinna AI?
Yes. Rinna is an AI character first built by Microsoft Japan as a LINE chatbot in 2015 and run since 2020 by its spin-off rinna Co., Ltd., later an AI singer and an AITuber with an illustrated avatar.
The case rests on what her makers built and what the press reports about it, not on her looks. Japanese Wikipedia describes Rinna as Microsoft Japan's second AI character after China's Xiaoice, launched on LINE in July 2015. It says her speaking voice comes from speech synthesis and her replies are generated live. Her singing voice is modelled by an AI trained on a large set of human voice recordings, and no singer is credited. KAI-YOU, reporting her October 2025 hiatus, calls her an AI character developed and run by rinna Co., Ltd., which took her over from Microsoft Japan in 2020.
No page names a human who performs, voices or writes as Rinna. The dossier's lead naming Riho Iida is a misreading: Tokyoesque says only that Rinna appeared alongside the model and voice actress in a video, not that Iida voices her. Her developers call themselves her 'guardians', and her face, revealed in 2020, is a cloud-patterned mask. Since 2023 she has been an illustrated Live2D avatar.
What remains unknown is how much human editing went into her later YouTube videos and posts. The pages do not say how scripted her AITuber output was. Whose recordings trained the singing model is also not stated. Neither changes the answer: she is a corporate AI persona with no named performer behind her.
Evidence
Japanese Wikipedia says Rinna was Microsoft's second AI character after Xiaoice, that her phone-call voice is speech synthesis with replies generated on the spot, and that her singing voice is an AI model trained on human voice data.
ja.wikipedia.orgKAI-YOU describes Rinna as an AI character developed and run by rinna Co., Ltd., released by Microsoft Japan in 2015 as a LINE conversational AI and turned into a VTuber in 2023.
kai-you.netTokyoesque calls Rinna an AI-powered personality developed by Microsoft to emulate a Japanese schoolgirl, and mentions a video in which the AI interacted with model and voice actress Riho Iida.
