Biography

About Mark Hoppus

Mark Allan Hoppus, born on March 15, 1972, in Ridgecrest, California, is an American musician, songwriter and record producer, best known as co-lead vocalist, bassist and co-founder of Blink-182. He grew up partly near Washington, D.C., found punk rock and skateboarding in junior high after his parents divorced, and taught himself bass from age 15 by listening to the Descendents, The Cure and Bad Religion.

He formed Blink-182 in San Diego in 1992 with Tom DeLonge and drummer Scott Raynor, and the band released Cheshire Cat in 1995. With drummer Travis Barker, Enema of the State (1999) made them mainstream stars with "What's My Age Again?" and "All the Small Things". They split in 2005, and Hoppus formed +44 with Barker. They reunited in 2009 after producer Jerry Finn's death and Barker's plane crash, and made Neighborhoods (2011). Matt Skiba replaced DeLonge from 2015 for California and Nine, and DeLonge returned in 2022.

Hoppus mostly writes on acoustic guitar and is self-taught. Outside Blink-182 he made two EPs as Simple Creatures with Alex Gaskarth, produced bands including New Found Glory and Motion City Soundtrack, hosted the Fuse series Hoppus on Music, launched the Hi My Name is Mark clothing line in 2012 and has hosted the Apple Music podcast After School Radio since 2020.

In 2021 he revealed that he was being treated for stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and said in September 2021 that he was cancer-free. In April 2025 he published the memoir Fahrenheit-182, co-written with Dan Ozzi, which was well reviewed, and in March 2025 he auctioned a Banksy painting for $5.4 million, with part of the proceeds going to charity.
