Biography
Josh Rubin is an executive producer and creative lead at Waymark, a Detroit-based video technology company whose stated mission is to let people make their own commercials. He has worked with the company for years alongside fellow creative lead Stephen Parker.
Rubin wrote and directed The Frost, a science fiction short that Waymark made in 2023 by feeding his script to OpenAI's DALL-E 2, generating every shot as an image and animating the stills with D-ID. MIT Technology Review published the 12-minute film in June 2023. Waymark's Parker has described the project as an exploratory side effect of the team's work on new technology for customers.
Rubin has said the team built the film's look from what DALL-E gave back to them, and that getting emotional expression in faces was a struggle. He told the magazine that a few minutes of trial and error could produce a shot that fits a sequence. The film later grew into a 23-minute version with a second part made with AI filmmaker Jeff Synthesized, which the film's YouTube page says premiered on 15 September 2024 at the Creator RenAIssance Programme in Singapore, presented as A Josh Rubin Film by Waymark Creative Labs.
