Biography
Abhik Banerjee is an Indian filmmaker described by Indian Television as a filmmaker and creative collaborator at Tamasha Studios, a studio working on AI-led storytelling. Some outlets and the film's own YouTube page spell his first name Abhick. The pages read do not give his age, hometown or earlier career.
His best-known work is the Hindi short Sitara, which he wrote and directed and made with Rollsound, an independent production outfit. It follows Bittu, a man who cleans the city's toilets and wants only to be called by his name and perhaps have someone ask for a photograph with him, until a stranger's kindness and a scrap of newspaper set him on a surreal path to that dream. The film was an official selection of the Higgsfield Global Film Festival 2026.
In October 2026 Sitara took second place at the Astana AI Film Festival in Kazakhstan, which drew 8,067 entries from 125 countries and sent 25 films to its final competition. Indian Television reports the prize as $250,000 (about Rs 2.4 crore) and an Outstanding Artistic Achievement recognition for Banerjee; Entrackr gives the sum as $200,000. The jury included former UNESCO director-general Audrey Azoulay, and the Grand Prix went to Latvia's Nikolai Shestak.
Banerjee has said AI is a very young medium and that the interesting question is what kind of cinema becomes possible because these tools exist. He told Entrackr's reporter that AI gives filmmakers ways to build visual worlds that are hard or costly to make conventionally, while stressing story, character and emotional depth. Tamasha Studios founder Mithilesh Bhagat says the studio explores AI across micro-dramas, series, films, animation and hybrid shoots.
