Members of the Television Critics Association, a nonprofit of more than 220 people who cover TV, have voted to change the group's bylaws so that members may not publish work produced entirely by generative AI, TV Tech reports.

The new guidelines still permit industry-standard tools. TCA president Andy Dehnart, founder of reality blurred, said the rule tells readers and the industry that members will not pass off machine-written text as their own, and argued that generative AI is built on the stolen work of TV critics, journalists, media outlets and other writers and artists.

The same vote widened who can join. Membership is now open to professionals who produce TV criticism, reporting and coverage in any medium, including podcasters and creator-journalists who publish in email newsletters or vertical video. Dehnart said the changes reflect how the work has already changed. Applications are open and are vetted by the board, and members get access to exclusive press conferences, workshops and discounts.

At the annual meeting, members also re-elected Kevin Fallon of The Daily Beast and Alex Reif of Laughing Place as directors.
