The 23rd Jarasum Jazz Festival in Gapyeong, South Korea, is adding a Jazz AI Lounge where human musicians improvise with artificial intelligence. It is being built with KAIST's MACLab and Studio Meta K under a Korea Creative Content Agency programme for music made with new technology.
There are two formats. In performance sessions, an AI pianist that has already learned the pieces plays alongside acts including Heo Dae-wook and the Kwak Jung-min Trio, tracking where they are in a tune even when they stray from the rehearsed version. In improvisation sessions, an AI with no prior training on the material listens to a pianist and generates bass and drum parts on the spot, shifting as the player changes course.
The AI's output drives a Yamaha Disklavier, so the keys and pedals of a real piano move, while Studio Meta K shows the AI player as a virtual musician on LED screens. The festival, which has tried AI composition and XR concerts before, runs from 9 to 11 October.
