Lightstorm Vision, the 3D company James Cameron founded, has acquired Outsyders, a firm that uses AI to convert footage into stereoscopic 3D. The deal was announced on September 16.
Outsyders' platform mixes real and synthetic data and is sold on letting small teams make 3D faster and more cheaply than traditional conversion. Its credits include Cameron's Billie Eilish concert film, Lilo & Stitch, Tron: Ares and Moana. Joined to Lightstorm's native 3D capture, the aim is one end-to-end 3D service for studios.
Cameron said the two had worked together for almost two years and called their AI tools world class; Outsyders chief executive Paul Becker said his team was glad to join.
