British producer and DJ Fred again.. posted a set of Instagram stories on September 25 setting out why he will not use generative AI, drawing on notes he says he wrote about a year ago. The posts add him to the list of musicians and producers who have come out against generative AI in recent months. His argument is that the opposite of AI music is not human music but the act of making it, and that the process is where the value lies.

He says he has never felt tempted to try AI tools. So much of his identity sits in the work of making songs, which he treats as a daily meditation and a way of finding himself, that handing it to a machine would go against what he loves. He does worry about plenty that AI threatens, he adds, but not the years of stubborn trial and error that go into chasing an idea.

MusicRadar places the posts among a growing number of musicians speaking out. Jason Isbell led a group of artists in a class action against Suno this month over the use of their identities, claiming Suno used their identities without permission to imitate their styles. In May, Jack Antonoff argued in an Instagram post that optimising the creative process misses why people make music at all, and told those excited about new ways to fake art that they were welcome to leave.

Fred again.. recently released Sexy Magic, a collaboration with PinkPantheress on the Grand Theft Auto VI soundtrack, a 34-track compilation of original songs that also features Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Travis Scott and Rauw Alejandro.
