Brian May has said he backed away from a Queen avatar concert he had seriously planned, because he concluded it could not be made without large-scale use of AI.
May says seeing the Eagles at the Las Vegas Sphere pushed him to map out a show that would put Queen at their peak in front of audiences, in the vein of ABBA Voyage and the avatar projects announced by KISS and the Osbourne family. He spent a good deal of time sketching what it would look like.
His objection is ethical. He does not want to take other people's work, is unsure where drawing only on Queen's own catalogue would sit, and says any version would still add to the strain AI is putting on the world, so he is less keen than he was. The piece places this alongside wider fears about AI costing creative jobs.
May has not ruled it out: he likes the idea of a permanent venue where fans could see the band live at any era, but says for now he is waiting rather than going ahead.
