A day after former New York Times tech columnist Kevin Roose's book on the race to artificial general intelligence went on sale, a seemingly AI-generated lookalike called "The AGI Chronicles" appeared on Amazon under the name "K. Rose". It surfaced directly beneath the genuine book in search results.

The copy cost $24.69 against $30.00 for the real title and had no reviews, yet it was listed as the number one new release in Human-Computer Interaction, while Roose's own Kindle edition sat third among that category's best sellers. Its cover omitted some of the deliberately garbled lettering on the real jacket.

Roose called the result embarrassing in a post that included a screenshot of the search page. The outlet notes similar fakes shadowed Kashmir Hill's book and Cory Doctorow's "Enshittification" on their release days and that years of reporting have changed little.
