A feature documentary on 1976 Formula 1 champion James Hunt, Hunt: We Need to Talk About James, is in production at Deep Fusion Films, a London studio known for visual effects and AI reconstruction rather than archive filmmaking. Deadline reported that more racing figures have joined the project, first announced two years ago.
The 90-minute film is made in exclusive partnership with the James Hunt Estate, and his son Freddie is an executive producer, alongside Benjamin Field and Jamie Anderson. Deep Fusion's AI work is led by Christian Darkin, and co-founder Field used a similar archive-and-effects approach on a Gerry Anderson documentary.
The film promises previously unseen interviews with Niki Lauda and Mika Häkkinen, and Richard Wiseman organises the archive the AI work builds on. The film is shot mainly in the UK. The report notes such tools can also rebuild moments cameras never caught, which is why the family's involvement matters.
Hunt won the 1976 title by a point after a season-long duel with Lauda, later became a BBC commentator, and died in 1993 aged 45. The estate's approval is what the piece says makes the reconstruction read as tribute.
